Male lawmakers in New Zealand are now no longer required to wear neckties after Maori Party co-leader Rawiri Waititi protested against the necktie policy calling it a colonial noose
Waititi was denied to ask any questions in the debate chamber and eventually ordered him to leave for wearing a taonga and not a business necktie. After huge debate, the Standing Orders Committee Speaker Mallard stated “As Speaker, I am guided by the committee’s discussion and decision, and therefore ties will no longer be considered required as part of ‘appropriate business attire’’
Waititi and other MPs were spotted without ties in parliament on Thursday.
